I bet that when you started this journey in the your own business, you didn’t realize exactly how much time you would have to spend marketing yourself and your products and services, right? You figured that your genuine love and passion for what you do combined with the fact that you are so darn good at it would be apparent to everyone and all you would have to do was let your friends and family know about your new business, share the news on social media, maybe take out a small ad in your church or community newsletter and you’d start getting clients. You’d do such a great job for them that they would refer you to more and more people and before you knew it you’d have a more business than you could handle. Sound familiar? I thought the same thing!
The reality is a little different, isn’t it? My first mentor told me “friends and family are best left to cell phone plans. You’re going to have to look outside your current circle to find your best clients.” I didn’t believe her at the time, but of course, she was right!
I started my business while staying at home with my children while they were preschool age. I loved what I was doing but, truth be told, it was more a hobby than it was a real business. I spent years selling a respectable amount of travel but it just wasn’t enough to justify continuing the business and not going back to work once my youngest child started school. It was around that time I decided I had to buckle down and figure out what it would take to find more clients and more business.
It took me a while, but I learned to not only embrace marketing but come to actually love doing it! In fact, over the last few years I figured out that I’m actually a better marketer than I am travel agent. Over the course of just over 2 years, my agency grew by almost 1,000% – essentially, we added a zero to our already respectable sales numbers.
Over the last few years I’ve come to really love working with entrepreneurs to help them increase the visibility of their business, get more clients and make more money. I love that once you figure out what works in your marketing, you can continue to apply the same process and watch the results multiply.
Nothing has made me happier than helping other entrepreneurs get visible and grow their businesses significantly. Turning what could be a confusing concept in to a step-by-step, easy to understand process is my specialty.
I believe that online marketing – and in particular social media – is pretty much a non-negotiable for any business today. It doesn’t matter who your target market is, you can bet they are doing research online! At the same time, I think it’s important to approach social media, and marketing in general, in a way that is efficient and effective so it doesn’t become a huge time suck that you dread doing!
